C-130 Flightline Homecoming

Usually, C-130 homecomings are chaos with masses of people and loud noises. This homecoming was the complete opposite.

With just one Marine welcoming a loved one, we had the MCAS Miramar flightline all to ourselves, and as any military aviation family, that location holds so much meaning.

Yes, it’s covered in oil stains and there are divots and tie downs everywhere. It’s either deafeningly loud or absolutely silent. There’s always a weird smell and chances are high you’ll see some sort of critter (I’ve seen owls and mice, to name a few).

But the flightline is also a place of extreme emotion. It’s where families are reunited after an eight-month deployment, or where families are separated after walking through the turnstiles one final time. It’s the site of celebratory first and last flights, changes of command and promotions.

I will never not love being on the flightline, even though it seems to have a microclimate of its own!
