Coronado Beach Maternity Photos
This Coronado beach maternity session was a truly magical one featuring a Navy veteran mama, her active duty husband and their little guy. It led me to think of the military-affiliated parents who do this - pregnancy, parenting - alone.
My sister is my best friend and a single mom to two under six. Every day, she gets the kids ready for school, packs lunches, goes to her office to work a full day, picks them up, brings them to soccer or karate or swim lessons, makes dinner, then puts them to bed and starts the process all over again alone.
People frequently tell her, “I don’t know how you do it. I’m so exhausted when my partner is out of town. I can’t wait until they’re home.” And she just smiles and sighs, gives them grace and pours a glass of wine because this - solo parenting - is her normal.
In the context of military life, it’s similar. Even when your servicemember is home, duty to country and their job is at the forefront. It’s not like they can say no to a det or workup or deployment or training. They get the call and they have to go. And those left behind solo parent.
But what choice do you have? You just do it. You smile and sigh and give grace to those who say, “I don’t know how you do it,” because what choice do you have? You just do.
In those hard moments, give yourself some grace. Pour yourself a glass of wine, eat that bar of chocolate, watch your trashy TV. You’re doing it, and I’m really freaking proud of you.
(And I promise not to tell you I don’t know how you do it.)
