A Unique Airport Military Homecoming

This military homecoming at San Diego International Airport was by far the most unique I've ever shot.

Being reunited with your spouse feels a lot like a weight lifted off your shoulders. But what does it feel like to be reunited with your two-year-old daughter?

From the outside perspective, it looks like a puzzle piece falling into place, like a round peg fitting perfectly into its accompanying hole, like the part of you that made you whole is back.

Sicilia's little girl spent the six months with her mom, sister and aunt in the Midwest. When she deployed, she hadn't yet started walking. Now? Well, you can see her leash backpack!

When Sicilia, who was deployed to Japan for six months, descended the escalator and caught sight of her little girl, she frantically waved then sprinted over, dropping to her knees and grabbing hold of her daughter. She just kept breathing her in, her eyes closed. Her daughter - who had spent almost all of our time waiting by running circles through baggage claim - was calm, almost serene. She knew she was back in her mom’s arms. Sicilia just kept saying, “mommy’s home now.”

Are you crying yet? Because I definitely was.
