San Diego Airport Military Homecoming
This Navy homecoming at San Diego International Airport was one worth waiting for.
Imagine this: it’s a warm summer night in the middle of a global pandemic, and you’re watching TV on the couch with your husband. He’s in the Navy Reserves after an active duty career, working for a local company, and in the 10+ years you’ve been together, all while he was either active duty or reserves, he never deployed. Suddenly, he gets an email: he’s been activated and deploying to Africa in a few months for an indeterminate amount of time.
What choice do you have? You just soldier on. Your kids have school and sports and friends. They break bones and cry out for dad and all you can do is call and hope he’s awake (which he is, thank God).
Time passes as it always does and before long, you’re making signs and he’s back in the States taking a cross-country flight home. You and your kids wait anxiously by arrivals and finally he turns the corner, and you sob in disbelief because he’s finally here. After nearly 11 months, he’s finally home. And the burden you’ve been carrying, the weight on your shoulders, it lifts, and everything feels so much lighter.
